Jones was happy to see Julie the next day. They sat together in the public gardens, one of their favorite parks in The City. Many large beautiful trees and flowers lined the walking paths. Julie and Jones circled around the shallow pond in the middle and found a shaded grassy spot. The flowers were blooming, the pops of bright reds, deep violets, and sharp pinks contrasting with the pale green grass that would eventually find its own vibrancy later in the summer. The sun warmed them, but Julie still brought a thick blanket to combat the chilly wind.

“So, work must be very time consuming right now?” Jones asked her.

“Yes,” Julie said with a smile, stretching her legs across the blanket. “It’s been a whirlwind since the Session. But we won’t start the clinical trials until September.”

“It was fun watching you on all the news channels.”

Julie rolled her eyes.

“I’m actually taking some personal time at the end of the month before things get really busy.”

“Are you staying local?” Jones asked.

“No,” Julie responded, lowering her voice. “I’m going to The Oceanside.”

The Oceanside was known as an old bloodline vacation destination. Many had summer estates that lined the beach. The O’Connors included.

Mick said she’d tell me on her own terms and to let her. Don’t push her, Jones reminded himself.

“I need to ask you for a favor,” Jones said, changing the subject as he gazed out across the pond. “You know how I worry about Mick? I’m thinking there might be something he’s not telling either of us about his work situation.”

Julie glanced over at Jones before quickly averting away. Jones believed Julie knew more than she probably even realized when it came to what happened within the walls of COLI*GO.

“Do you know about the relationship Mick has with his Uncle Jeb?” Jones probed.

“No, Mick never talked to me about his family other than to say he left everything in the past,” she responded softly.

Jones hadn’t realized Mick only confided in him about his rocky relationship. A small glimmer of appreciation cascaded through him.

“There’s a complicated family dynamic. Jeb paid for Mick’s education at The University.” Jones looked over at Julie before continuing. “Right before Mick started classes, they got into a falling out. I’m not quite sure why, but they haven’t made amends. And it’s a shame because Jeb lives here in The City.”

“I didn’t realize Mick had family here. I thought they were all in The Countryside.”

“Only Jeb. He’s actually a famous artist. Supposedly, he left the family in The Countryside when Mick was fairly young to pursue his dreams in art. But he got caught up in some shady dealings with law enforcement in the past, and there’s a rumor he’s doing consulting work at COLI*GO.”

“An artist?” Julie’s eyes raised in disbelief. “And someone with a criminal record?”

Jones nodded, his eyes squinting from the bright sun.

“Everything COLI*GO does is highly confidential. Jeb would be a risky hire.”

“I thought so, too,” Jones said, closing his eyes as he lay down on the blanket.
